I went up to da Bronx last wednesday as usual. The building next to the farmers' market , which I am helping with, is owned by the organization called City Harvest. City Harvest hands out foods and goods to anyone in the community. A lot of people make long line for the food, complaining but waiting patiently.
Corn flake, yogurt, water, oatmeal, cracker, vegetables..Most foods are very close to discards because its old.
Last wednesday, they distributed onions and potatoes.People in the line took foods to the home in full of their empty cart.
One lady, carried very huge box with full of potatoes and onions. At a sudden, box could not persist the weight of veggies. Box was broken, and onions and potatoes were rolling all over the street. While I was helping her to pick those up, I found out that most of the veggies were rotten. There were almost nothing they can cook and eat.
It was shocking to me. Since those are free and donated, people supposed not to complaining about the quality, but is that the way organization should work for? To hand out bad foods even they know about it? But people have no choice.I always think that wealth is not only that they can live life in rich, but about they have many options. On the other hand, people in poverty have least choices and alternatives.
by the way, people in Bronx are very sweet so far.
